Graduate and Professional School

Consider the combination of undergraduate and graduate/professional education when exploring majors and careers. Often the two educational paths will provide the best preparation for a career.

For some occupations, career-focused training happens in graduate or professional school. In other cases, the reverse can be true: a person’s undergraduate degree develops specific job-related skills, while the graduate or professional degree provides broad skill development.

Academic vs. Professional Graduate Programs

Academic Programs

Academic graduate programs provide advanced study in an academic discipline, often with a focus on original academic research. This is especially true in the case of PhD programs.

Professional Programs

Professional programs focus more on training for particular careers; medical, law, pharmacy, and social work are all examples of professional educational paths.
