"Hey my name Dialma Quiroz and I'm a Salt Lake Community College transfer student!
I am super passionate about art and SLCC was the perfect way for me as a first-gen low-income student to transition into the post-secondary education environment. I've connected with many folks on campus, made amazing friends, and took advantage of the opportunities they had on campus such as TRIO SSS, the Honors Program, Bruin Scholars Program, and internship opportunities. Now that I'm here, I'm studying Games with focus on Virtual Reality simulations because I believe it can be an engaging and impactful way to learn and create.
Once I transferred to the U, I was lost and nervous. This campus is giant compared to SLCC and I didn't know where to go or who to get in contact with. When I attended Orientation in November, I was able to meet with Paul Fisk and Christie Toth who then connected me to tons of resources on campus. With their support I was able to receive scholarships, build relationships with other transfer students, and be exposed to other opportunities such as research, workshop events, and getting a job helping other transfer students.
Making connections and new friends on campus is tough, especially coming from one community into another. I highly recommend checking out RSO's (Registered Student Organizations) and Transfer Student Success workshops! Those are great places to start if you want to connect with people who have similar interests or experiences. I enjoy being highly involved so here are some things that I've been involved with or currently involved in: Honors Program, Writing Studies Scholars, TRIO SSS, Crimson Gaming, Game Craft, Geekwave StudentMedia and many more! My culture is very important to me, being a child of Mexican and Bolivian parents and so I joined Latinas in Tech to network with other professional Latine folks in Utah.
I love to connect with other students from any background so don't hesitate to reach out to either Paul Fisk or I!

Academic Planning
Following a plan at SLCC will save you time and money at the U of U
Try to make your academic plan at SLCC match the academic plan for the first two years of your major at the U of U.
- Study the major maps for your intended U of U major
- Explore University of Utah degrees in the U of U catalog
- Meet with the major advisor for your U of U major
Sequential vs. Flexible Majors
Most U of U majors fall into two types: sequential and flexible. Your planning at SLCC depends on what type of major you are interested in at the U of U.
Sequential majors
- Strict academic plans intended to be followed closely
- Sequential courses with strictly-enforced prerequisites
- Courses offered at limited times (i.e., courses that are only offered in Fall Semester
followed by courses that are only offered in Spring).
- Students must carefully follow published academic plans or they will miss out on classes essential to the sequence of courses and delay their graduation.
- Many required classes with very little (if any) room for elective classes
SLCC students interested in sequential majors should follow as closely as possible the U’s academic plans and check that their SLCC classes are articulated to meet U of U major requirements.
Flexible Majors
- Academic plans that can be varied for individual students based on interests, time constraints, etc.
- Few sequential courses with very few prerequisites
- A relatively small number of required credit hours leaving lots of room for electives
- The capability for students to add a double major or minor without delaying graduation
SLCC students interested in flexible majors can take more classes for fun or general interest while at SLCC and may want to consider adding a minor or double major to their academic plan.
Meet with U of U major advisors to make the most of your time at SLCC.
